I bought this little laptop for my wife last week to replace her aging Dell Inspiron e1505 (which was also a fantastic laptop), and I can tell you (as an IT expert since 1979) that this is the best bang for the buck out there in the world of laptops! The only thing missing is that it does not have USB 3.0 (which some specs say it has, but it does not). You can't beat the new Intel i5 2nd generation CPU for speed (Sandy Bridge Core), and the Intel HD graphics are fine unless you plan to be playing games with high demand on video. You can easily upgrade the memory from 4 to 8gb for cheap, and the 500gb hard drive should be plenty for 98% of folks out there. We got ours at Best Buy for $450 plus tax. Take my advice and don't spend more for a laptop - you don't need to. Also, keep in mind that if a laptop breaks it usually isn't worth getting it fixed unless it is really simple, or you can do it yourself (as I do). So, don't invest BIG money (not over $600 in my opinion) in one. My 2 cents based on many years of experience.

Lets be basic. Here are the pros and cons.
PROS:
As long as you don't run super intense programs, or high graphics on games, the computer functions very well.
Comes with I5. Its much better than I3, and you will see the difference.
For a laptop, it has a GIANT screen. In today's world 15.6" may not seem like a large screen but when you get your hands on it, it is.
Portable. Fits in any case and is easy to carry around.
3 USB drives. 2 on the right and 1 on the left. you would be amazed with how convenient it is to have USB drives on each side of the computer.
60 day free norton security. After that you have to pay, but for internet security, norton is great. While its only 60 days, it avoids the hassle of installing and paying for it on the website.
Windows 7 is great.
for the 500 bucks, its a great value.
The touch pad works well
CONS:
when you use it for a while, the computer starts to heat up. While it doesn't affect performance, it just makes you a little weary about the computer, and can be uncomfortable at times. (but during the winter it is amazing.)
while it can run many games at decent settings, you will not be able to play games at maxed out settings.
There is no obvious visual division between the left and right click. While when you use it you will figure it out, it can be a little confusing at first.
the F1-F12 buttons also serve as the display buttons. so if you need to hit any F# button, you need to hold down (Fn). It is just a little hassle.
OVERALL:
Great laptop for daily use and basic gaming. Takes a little while to get used to the little differences. Good price, good hardware, good buy.

It says it has USB 3 but it does not. It looks like one but is not recognized as one, this has been commented on by others, including an IT professional. In addition the track pad did not work and the dvd would not eject. I returned for refund but did not get the full amount back. I lost money on shipping and insurance. Gateway NV5929u, i5-430m, 4GB DDR3 memory Deals

This laptop is completely awesome. Basically, whoever assembled these at Gateway messed up and put a Core i5 430M in the machine instead of the Core i3 330M that it was supposed to have. This laptop is very fast and capable and it will be very hard to find a laptop with an i5 CPU and a Blu-Ray drive for this price. Windows 7 is such a great OS compared to Vista. It's hard for me to say this, but I actually switched from a Macbook to get this laptop. With this hardware and Windows 7 you'll be hard pressed to find a better laptop. Just about the only thing I've found that this machine can't do is play the most demanding games. The Intel HD GPU comes with only 128 MB of VRAM (I think it can share some of the system memory too). You can play some games with it, but just make you sure you read the system requirements before you buy. I have played Civilization IV so far without any problems. Basically, unless you're a hardcore gamer, I highly recommend this laptop for the price.

I bought this Gateway laptop when a 3 year old Gateway 14.1" Vista's Hard Drive Failed. However I use this for business and pleasure. This is the 5th Gateway. This brand is under-rated. My business partner has her 3 year old laptop and uses it day and night, never breaking. Other brands such as Dell and Sony caused laptop hell.
Got this unit on sale in Bestbuy for $499.00 what a find, it had an I5 chip instead of the posted I3 chip. It is the fastest laptop I ever owned, even beating a new Dell Desktop in speed. Turns on and signs off really fast. The keyboard did not take me long to master, but because of the extremely bright LED screen this unit should have had a back-lit keyboard.
The screen does not appear to be as clear as my glossy 3 year old but this is 15.6". The bluray drive is fantastic, my Son is amazed at the clarity.
The battery is OK and lasts longer on an energy saver setting which also cuts down on the intense brightness of the screen, which can be a plus in may situations. However the battery recharges really fast.
This is a high quality machine, mated to Windows 7 it is the ultimate laptop.
I fixed my 3 year old Gateway, and it is also working fine, but no way can it compare to this new model. The wireless capability is miraculous. Buy it and it will make you happy. If you have to love something, this beauty is light and easy to carry over the threshold.

I am still loading software. This computer is fast. It is a NV5927U with an i5 chip and Blu-ray player. The seller compares the computer to the NV5929U. But the specs don't quite match up. So, don't bother comparing the specs. This computer is an excellent deal. If the price holds up 30 days, it will be even a better deal. I only say that because every time I buy a computer, there is a better deal within a month of the purchase. Oh well, that's technology for you.
It has been a month now and I haven't found anything better yet. Just not much out there that I can use with the 64 Bit OS. But that will change. Blu-ray works well. All programs loaded and functional accept the Palm Sync for my Palm Z22. So, I'll have to find a substitute for that. I had to get a wireless mouse, since the touch pad is too sensitive. Also, the multi-touch takes getting used too. I have completely switched over to the new computer and so far it has been performing well.
Battery life is about 3 hours. Not bad for a 6 cell. If a 9 or 12 cell is available, I will get one and use the 6 cell as a back-up.

15.6" Gateway® NV59C66u Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Deals

This review is from: 15.6" Gateway® NV59C66u Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook 500GB Computer with BLU-RAY (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a new replacement laptop and bought this one from Best Buy, party due to the many good reviews it had. I have been very satisfied.
My old laptop chugged and chugged on the hard drive, and I had decided that my next laptop would have a 7200rpm hard drive for the speed factor. However, I never found a laptop I liked with a 7200rpm hard drive. Furthermore, after doing research on hard drive speeds, I found out that a 7200rpm hard drive is not necessarily faster than all 5400rpm hard drives. This laptop has a 5400rpm hard drive, and I have been very satisfied with the speed.
My old laptop did not play videos well, stuttering on full screen standard def videos due to low processing power. I decided that my new laptop would need to handle 1080p full screen videos smoothly, and so far this laptop has been doing that.
As I researched new laptops, I noticed that some laptops seemed to get too hot. I have been impressed with how cool this laptop runs. Now mind you, you have to give it proper ventilation. If you are smothering the bottom by having it rest on a blanket, it will get warm/hot. But if you have it on a flat surface like a lapdesk, etc., it runs relatively cool. It's even cooler than my old laptop.
My old laptop had static on the headphone port, so I wanted to make sure that this one did not, and I have not noticed any static.
I'm glad I got this laptop, and I would recommend it.

I bought this laptop as a replacement a year and a half ago. It has worked very well for me since then, no problems with the system. However, the hardware has slowly deteriorated over time, just from regular use. The screen hinge on the left side has loosened and when I went to open the laptop today, the hinge ripped a bunch of the plastic off the corner of the screen and the corner of the laptop itself. Another issue I had was that the charger plug also came loose, causing the laptop to not recognize that it is plugged in. Overall this laptop works well, but the hardware issues after long-term use that I have had would cause me not to recommend it to others. The hinges especially appear to be poorly made.

I have good luck with Gateways in the past and this one is another real winner from the value standpoint, with a fast, cool running CPU, plenty of memory, a spacious and fast hard drive, n-wireless, plus Blu-ray and Wimax built in, you cannot beat this laptop for the price.
It's the only i3 laptop so equipped at this price point that I could find.
Setup was a breeze, thanks to Windows 7's near painless setup procedures. Almost no crapware to get rid of beyond the ubiquitous Norton Anti-virus (use free Avast or AVG and save the ridiculous yearly fees charged by Norton et al). Exceedingly quiet, as most laptops tend to be, and good battery life....about 4 hours when new. Not the best but not bad.
Don't need wimax yet but I tried it and it works. If you can afford the hefty monthly fees and live in area where this is available, it might but worthwhile. Nice to have if you need it in the future.
Keyboard may be the only downside. As a touch typist, I don't particularly like the square flat chicklet keys, but for those who want a stand alone numeric keypad, it's there on this larger than usual laptop keypad.
Screen format is 16:9, great for watching Blu-ray movies but shorter than the usual 15.6-inch screen. Screen quality is good but not great. There's HDMI out for connecting to larger screens.
Some don't like the satin "espresso" (brown) finish but it like it better than the shiny piano black of my old laptop, which showed every finger and palm print. Touchpad works OK, supports gestures.
Very good built in speakers, best I have ever heard on a laptop. Special "social media" key for launching all the usual suspects in one keystroke.
A good deal for the money.
My 5 year-old core2duo Gateway is still cranking but decided to upgrade because the battery was toast and wanted to move up to Windows 7. Hopefully, the new one will be as reliable as the old one, which cost a third more and is a bit heavier.

This computer offers everything a computer 3 times the price can. My 18 year old daughter wanted a MacBook Pro. I was unwilling to spend that kind of money for a laptop so I did a lot of research and with the help of the many reviews I read from others who had purchased this laptop, I chose this one. Well, my daughter was dissapointed for a half a second because when she turned this one on she raved about how great it was and was even better than the Mac. The screen display was impressive and 2 months later and she still "loves it'! I never told her the price ;)

I was looking for an affordable, reasonably fast, easy to use PC for my wife. I found the Gateway NE56R34u 15.6" laptop at a great price at amazon.com. As usual with amazon.com, delivery was quick. The PC worked right out of the box, which is always a good sign. The 15.6" screen is perfect, and the performance is just right. It came with Windows 8, which takes a little getting used to. There is no user manual, but there is a cheat sheet that comes with the unit. It is very helpful, but not needed once you get the hang of the Windows 8 user interface. I highly recommend this PC to anyone looking for a moderately priced unit that does the job.

I bought this computer on sale for under $300.00 locally but thought I would review it here also. One big plus is that it comes with 4G memory in ONE slot so you can upgrade another 4g. I bought a 4g stick for under $20.00 and put it in the available slot, very easy. I wiped wind blows 8 off the drive and installed Linux Mint 13 with no problems. I have been using this set-up for a couple of weeks and it's solid and very fast.

So I lucked out a bit and Gateway replaced my previous laptop with the NV7915u for free due to a battery issue. Free or not, this is a quality Desktop Replacement, trust me it's size is beyond that of the "laptop" category. I wanted that, you may not, but be aware that this is not a PC designed with mobility in mind. Now onto to useage, I run a dual boot Windows/Linux system and she performs great in either system. If you just want to all-around computer and are not a "gamer" you'll be fine with this piece of equipment.

I bought this computer in June. It did not include any disks for the software. I called in and they gave me a site to download the restoration disks. I did that and put them away. When the machine quit working after only six months, I tried the restoration disks and they would not boot up. I tried working with Tiget Direct who passed me off to Gateway, like they had no responsibility to support their sale to me.
Gateway was a total loss as far as support goes. I was told I could order a set of disks for 20.00. I did that and will have to wait about 10 days to get my system upo and running again, if it will run again.
As a buyer of a computer, I am entitled to software disks that will work.
I will not buy from either one of these companies again.

I have had this laptop for 6 months. I can not believe all the power this has for the price. I see the laptops that are listed near $2000 that have less power than this one. This huge screen makes a 15 inch look like a netbook when placed side by side. Yet it is still perfect for taking to the coffee shop to surf the web or play games. The battery life is amazing. It never seems to wear down! It has the dual layer dvd including the ability to burn titles or images on the front of the dvd. You just right click on any video file and a menu pops up with the option to burn to dvd. It burns perfectly every time. I haven't had even one burn fail and I buy the cheap blank dvds. I am happy with everything about this computer. I haven't had a single problem with it. I highly recommend this laptop.

I became scared when I read the 3 negative reviews that appeared the day after I purchased this computer, but I decided not to cancel the order. I am glad I did not, because it has turned out to be a very nice computer. I have had very good experiences with Gateway computers in the past; this is why I opted for a Gateway computer again.
One of the negative reviews mentioned a "cursor jumping" problem with this computer. Even though I am not aware of this problem in this particular model (at least so far), I know that this issue can be solved by disabling the "tapping" option on the mouse touchpad (I found out about this because I bought a netbook that had this same problem); this implies having to use the buttons below the touchpad to click and double-click, but this is something you can get used to very quickly. This computer did have an issue with the touchpad being too sensitive, but that was fixed by going to the Windows Control Panel and reducing the touchpad's tapping sensitivity.
All in all, I am very happy with the purchase, and I would more than likely purchase another Gateway if I had to buy another computer in the near future.

I had an Acer mini laptop which I sold before buying this computer. I had been searching for months for a brand that people don't complaint too much about. I decided to buy a Gateway Laptop because my dad has one and it have been working pretty well for a year now. I liked it so I bought this one for myself. Very good Laptop, The only problem is that it has poor speakers. Everything sounds too low for my taste! I first graded it 5 stars but now just 3! I'm gonna keep reviewing!
July/4/2012:
I totally now recommend this computer! It is almost a month a not a single bad thing has happened. The problem with the sound is over because I found out a way to resolve it. The keyboard is not as bad as people said in past reviews, you just have to get used to it as with everything in life! 5 stars back for it!
Something I love of this computer is the touchpad that makes you feel like you are dealing with a Mac touchpad.
Here are the tips for the sound in case you decide to buy it:
- I right-clicked the sound icon on the task bar and choose the sound option. Then in the playback option selected speakers (Realtek High Def audio) and clicked on properties and chose the Enhacements option. There I clicked on the disable sound effects option and Whalaaa! Super high volume!

Maybe its because I bought mine new or something, but I've had this computer for 5 months and I've had no problems. Good graphics, spacious hard drive, and works fast. Not a ton of bloatware though I'd recommend getting rid of Norton Security after the 30 day trial is done. All in all this is a great laptop.
P.S: I'll update the review after another 3 months or so.
EDIT: 9/24/13 - This laptop is still running great! The battery doesn't retain as much charge as it used to but all in all everything is great.a

Been a Gateway user for years. Only PC/laptop I'll buy, even though Acer bought them out. Great power, memory, and storage for the money. Fast 2GHz quad core processore! Cannot downgrade to Window 7 from 8 since there are only a few available drivers. Installed third party user interface to make it look and act like Windows 7. Works great. My wife is happy with it, and, if she's happy, I'm happy.

I didn't have a huge budget for a new laptop, so this one was a great find. It's everything I needed for work and school, and still powerful enough for mobile gaming and high-def movies. Also, surprisingly light for a widescreen laptop.

Someone told me that they purchased a 17 inch laptop for $300.00. I was very surprised that this was possible. So I looked for the least expensive one I could obtain and the Gateway NE72206U has the lowest price I could find. So I ordered one from Amazon since I had a good experience with a Gateway LT2815U netbook which has an unusually robust Intel Atom CPU. Out of the box it looks very nice. But after starting it the installed Norton Internet Security program took over and turned itself into something that behaved like a virus that would not let me do anything else. So I erased the hard drive to the maximum extent I could and installed a new copy of Windows 8 Pro I ordered from Microsoft in January 2013 (during their sale). That is why it would not connect to the internet. So I had to order a restoration disk from Gateway.com for $19.95 plus tax.
Evidently, it requires drivers that are not available from their web site to connect to the web. So I had I to install a Wireless-N USB adapter to connect to the internet. I managed to get it connect to the internet but only the internet browsers would work. So I went the to http://support.gateway.com/product site and downloaded eight drivers, four applications, one BIOS update, and a pdf copy of the Gateway N72206U User Manual which is not included with this computer. I installed the drivers one by one (some are multiplicates depending on who made the specific hardware component), the applications, and the BIOS update, and little by little it began to work as it should so that I could remove the Wireless-N USB adapter. So one definitely needs to be an IT professional to get the Gateway NE72206U to work as it should. I have installed Windows 8 on netbooks that were designed only for Windows 7 starter and they work much better with Windows 8 than they did with Windows 7 starter. That shows you that less costly netbooks are better designed than this Gateway NE72206U Notebook.
After using it a little more I have found that the keyboard is very erratic and the cursor tends to jump all over the page as you type which is typical of poorly designed computers. So you only can get what little you pay for here. Thus, the Gateway NE72206U is not a good value.
